December 6, 2023: In a significant political development, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) leader Lalduhoma met Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Wednesday to formally stake a claim to form the government following the party’s resounding victory in the recent assembly polls. The ZPM secured 27 out of the total 40 seats, emerging as the clear winner in the electoral battle held on November 7.
Lalduhoma, a former IPS officer who had previously served as the security-in-charge of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, held a crucial meeting with the newly elected party candidates on Tuesday evening. During the meeting, discussions centered around the formation of the council of ministers and the allocation of portfolios, as revealed by a party leader familiar with the matter.
According to sources within the ZPM, Lalduhoma is likely to be sworn in as the Chief Minister on Friday, marking a historic moment for the party and the state. Expressing satisfaction with the party’s majority win, Lalduhoma emphasized the importance of fostering strong ties with the Union government for the overall development of Mizoram.
The Mizoram Chief Electoral Officer, Madhup Vyas, accompanied by election officials, visited the governor on Tuesday to formally hand over the gazette containing the names of the 40 newly elected candidates from the assembly elections. This procedural step further paves the way for the formal process of government formation.
The ZPM’s victory in the assembly polls marked a significant shift in Mizoram’s political landscape, dethroning the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF), which managed to secure only 10 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress trailed far behind with just two and one seat(s) respectively.
The assembly polls witnessed robust participation, with more than 82 percent of over 8.57 lakh voters exercising their franchise on November 7. The overwhelming mandate in favor of the ZPM reflects the electorate’s confidence in the party’s vision and leadership.
As the political scenario unfolds, all eyes are set on Friday’s swearing-in ceremony, where Lalduhoma is poised to assume the mantle of Chief Minister, heralding a new chapter in Mizoram’s political landscape under the Zoram People’s Movement leadership.
