Agartala, Jan 09: The much-anticipated winter session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly is all set to commence on Friday, bringing with it significant legislative changes and key discussions. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha led a preparatory meeting with MLAs and leaders from BJP, IPFT, and Tipra Motha to set the agenda for the session. Speaker Biswabandhu Sen, BJP state president Rajib Bhattacharjee, and other prominent leaders were also present to discuss important matters.

Key Bill on Retirement Benefits for MLAs

One of the major highlights of the upcoming session will be the introduction of a bill aimed at amending the existing law to provide retirement benefits to MLAs who have served even for a single day. This amendment will ensure that MLAs who take the oath and serve in the House, even briefly, will be entitled to pension benefits and a housing loan, a significant step in enhancing the welfare of legislators.

Governor’s Address to Open the Session

On the first day of the session, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu will deliver his customary address to the House, where he will outline the achievements and future roadmap of the state government. His speech will emphasize the government’s performance and the vision for the state’s future.

Proposed Amendments to MLA Retirement Benefits

According to Assembly officials, the new bill will amend the existing provisions for retirement benefits. Previously, an MLA had to serve at least four-and-a-half years to receive pension and other benefits. However, under the proposed amendment, even a one-day tenure as an MLA will qualify a member for full retirement benefits, including pension and housing loans.

Increased Salaries and Benefits for Legislators

The new bill also aims to increase the salaries, allowances, pensions, and family pensions for Ministers, sitting MLAs, and former MLAs. This move is expected to be a significant development in terms of financial welfare for legislators, ensuring they receive adequate compensation for their service.
