Chennai, January 01, 2024: A heated exchange unfolded between leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and DMK Member of Parliament Dayanidhi Maran, as Maran referred to BJP IT Wing members as “jobless barbers” on Saturday. This war of words follows weeks after a four-year-old video surfaced, wherein Maran made controversial remarks about Hindi speakers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, sparking criticism from BJP leaders who accused him of insulting North Indians.
In the resurfaced video, the DMK MP commented, “Hindi speakers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar clean toilets in Tamil Nadu,” leading to a renewed controversy. Responding to BJP leaders’ reactions, Maran defended himself on Saturday, stating that BJP IT Wing members, particularly at the national level, were attempting to create chaos and likened them to “jobless barbers.”
“Jobless barbers catch hold of cats and shave its fur. Similarly, BJP IT Wing, especially national level IT Wing members want to create a ruckus using anything,” remarked Dayanidhi Maran.
The comment drew swift condemnation from Tamil Nadu BJP leaders, who accused Maran of insulting barbers. K Annamalai, BJP Tamil Nadu chief, criticized Maran’s tendency to “degrade someone’s profession or language” and urged an apology.
“Instead of apologizing, Thiru Dayanidhi Maran calls those spreading and reacting to his rants on our North Indian brothers and sisters the work of a ‘Jobless Barber’,” wrote Annamalai on X.
Degrading someone by profession or language seems to be the only thing DMK MP Thiru Dayanidhi Maran excels in.

BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla joined the criticism, characterizing Maran’s remark as an “elitist and casteist mindset.” Poonawalla addressed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, questioning whether this statement aligned with the ethos of ‘Mohabbat ki Dukaan’ while highlighting Rahul Gandhi’s recent engagements with farmers and mechanics.
