Sardar Patel was born on October 31 1875 in Gujrat and it is in his honour that the observance of his birth anniversary was introduced by the BJP government in Centre, marking the day as ‘Rashtriya Ekta Diwas’. Interestingly , the day of October 31 is also the death anniversary of former prime minister Indira Gandhi who had been gunned down by her own Sikh body guards in her official residence in the year 1984 on this very day.
