Tribal Kukis Rally in Manipur for Union Territory Status and Political Solution

Imphal, June 25: Hundreds of tribal Kuki-Zo people gathered across Manipur’s hill districts in a unified protest, advocating for a Union Territory (UT) status and a definitive “political solution” to end ongoing ethnic conflict. Led by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), demonstrators highlighted the potential of establishing a UT under Article 239A as a resolution to deep-seated grievances.

The protests, marked by poignant slogans such as “No Political Solution, No Peace” and “Union Territory for the Kuki-Zo People, Right Now!”, underscored the community’s urgent appeals to the central government, particularly Union Home Minister Amit Shah. They urged swift intervention to curb escalating violence that has claimed 221 lives and displaced over 50,000 individuals.

Simultaneous rallies in Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, and Pherzawl districts amplified demands for immediate governmental action amidst ongoing security risks. Recent incidents, including fatal attacks allegedly by Meitei groups, have exacerbated tensions, reinforcing the need for a lasting political resolution.

ITLF’s call for expedited efforts resonates against a backdrop of persistent instability, urging authorities to prioritize sustainable peace and security in Manipur’s tribal regions. The community’s impassioned plea underscores the imperative for tangible progress amid ongoing challenges.
