Nepal, January 13, 2024: A tragic incident unfolded in Nepal’s Lumbini province late on Friday night, claiming the lives of at least 12 people, including two Indian nationals, and leaving 23 others injured, as a passenger bus plunged into the Rapti river.
The ill-fated bus, en route to Kathmandu from Nepalgunj, met with the accident when it veered off the Rapti bridge in Bhgalubang and descended into the river along the East-West Highway, as reported by The Kathmandu Post.
Deputy Inspector of Police Sundar Tiwari stated, “Twelve people were killed in the accident after a passenger bus fell into the Rapti River. Two Indians were among the dead.”
All the injured individuals were promptly transported to the Nepalgunj Medical Teaching Hospital in Kohalpur for immediate medical attention.
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have taken the bus driver, identified as Lal Bahadur Nepali, 28, into custody to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.
The accident has raised questions about the safety measures on the East-West Highway, and local authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future. The entire community mourns the loss of lives and extends condolences to the families affected by this unfortunate event.
