Delhi, December 07: The Supreme Court will deliver the verdict on the abrogation of Article 370 on December 11. A five-judge Constitution bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud, and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant will deliver the verdict on a batch of pleas challenging the abrogation of Article 370 of the Constitution which conferred special status on the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir.
The bench had reserved its order on the matter on September 5 after 16 days of marathon hearings which started in August. The petitioners challenged the central government’s decision on August 5, 2019, when it abolished Article 370 and Article 35A, which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir. Article 370, combined with Article 35A, accorded Jammu and Kashmir special status under the Constitution of India, allowing it to have a separate constitution and a separate penal code among other legal distinctions. The petitioners included leaders of the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
