Seven Months into Israel-Hamas War: A Recap of the Humanitarian Crisis

Jerusalem, April 7, 2024: The ongoing war between Israel and Hamas has entered its seventh month, causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. The conflict began with a surprise attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the death of 1,170 Israelis and foreigners, most of them civilians.

In retaliation, Israel launched a massive bombardment and ground invasion that has, so far, resulted in the death of over 33,137 people in Gaza. Most of the casualties have been women and children. The Israeli military claims to have “eliminated” 12,000 enemy fighters.

The Israeli army has lost approximately 600 troops since the war began. Of the around 250 Israeli and foreign hostages abducted by Hamas on October 7, 129 remain in Gaza, of which the military says 34 are dead. The bodies of 12 hostages have been returned to Israel.

The war has also had repercussions in Lebanon and Syria. Israeli fire since October has killed at least 359 people in Lebanon, mostly Hezbollah fighters, while at least 70 civilians have also died. The cross-border fire has displaced tens of thousands of people in southern Lebanon.
