New Delhi, June 26: Om Birla, a three-time BJP Member of Parliament, was re-elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second time on Wednesday, following a voice vote victory over the INDIA bloc’s candidate, K Suresh, in a rare contest.
Om Birla, beaming with joy, assumed the Speaker’s chair amid a significant show of unity. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju escorted Birla to his new seat. In a rare moment of camaraderie, PM Modi and Rahul Gandhi exchanged smiles and shook hands before guiding Birla to the chair.
Prime Minister Modi, while congratulating Birla, commended his demeanor and experience. “I want to congratulate you on behalf of the House. It is a huge responsibility for you to sit on this post for the second time during the Amrit Kaal. With your experience, we hope that you will guide us for the next 5 years. The sweet smile on your face will keep the entire House happy,” said the Prime Minister, highlighting Birla’s positive influence in the House.
Rahul Gandhi, dressed in a complete white ensemble, extended his congratulations on behalf of the INDIA alliance, recognizing Birla’s pivotal role in representing the voice of the people. “I would like to congratulate you for your successful election that you have been elected for the second time. I would like to congratulate you on behalf of the entire Opposition and the INDIA alliance. This House represents the voice of India’s people, and you are the final arbiter of that voice,” Gandhi stated.
The BJP lauded Birla’s leadership qualities and his previous tenure, which was marked by fairness and effective management of parliamentary proceedings.
