Delhi, July 21: Chief Executive Members (CEMs) of the 10th Sixth Schedule Areas in India’s Northeast are preparing to meet with the Union Home Ministry to discuss the status of the 125th Amendment to the Indian Constitution. This crucial meeting is aimed at addressing the ongoing issues related to the autonomy and governance of the Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) in the region.

On Saturday, a significant gathering was held in Delhi under the leadership of Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, former chairman of Tipra Motha and the royal scion of Tripura. The meeting saw the participation of representatives from the District Councils across Northeast India, who came together to voice their concerns and advocate for their communities.

Speaking to India Today NE, Pradyot Kishore emphasized the unity and common agenda of the gathering. “The primary goal of this meeting is to strengthen the Autonomous District Councils, making them more effective and empowered to serve their communities. We aim to address common challenges, push for necessary policy changes, and enhance governance and development in the Sixth Schedule areas,” Pradyot stated.

A major focus of the discussions was on the constitutional amendments, including land rights and the pending 125th Amendment, which is currently before Parliament. “We all agreed that our problems are not being adequately addressed. Therefore, we need to ensure that our voices are heard and that we provide answers to our people. We have written to Home Minister Amit Shah, with all 10 CEMs signing the letter, seeking an update on the 125th Amendment. We need to protect our land and our people, and we want clarity on our position,” Pradyot added.

In addition to the upcoming meeting with the Home Ministry, Pradyot and Tipra Motha President BK Hrangkhawl are scheduled to meet AK Mishra, Special Advisor to the Ministry of Home Affairs, to discuss the Tiprasa Accord and its implications for the region.

This meeting underscores the ongoing efforts by the Northeast’s regional leaders to ensure greater autonomy and better governance for the Sixth Schedule areas, reflecting their commitment to addressing long-standing issues and enhancing their communities’ well-being.
