Nikki Haley has declared her support for an extreme abortion ban at six weeks after conception, a move that has triggered a sharp response from the Biden-Harris campaign, branding her as an “anti-abortion extremist.”
During an interview on Friday, Haley, who is vying for the Republican Party’s nomination for the 2024 US presidential election, was asked if she would sign a “heartbeat bill” if it reached her desk as the governor of South Carolina. “Yes,” she replied, endorsing a law that makes abortion illegal as early as six weeks gestational age, often referred to as a “fetal heartbeat bill.”
The Biden-Harris campaign swiftly criticized Haley for her stance on extreme abortion bans. Ammar Moussa, the Biden-Harris 2024 Rapid Response director, issued a statement accusing Haley of being an “anti-abortion MAGA (Make America Great Again) extremist” who, during her tenure as South Carolina governor, curtailed women’s freedoms.
“Nikki Haley is no moderate—she’s an anti-abortion MAGA extremist who wants to rip away women’s freedoms just like she did when she was South Carolina governor,” Moussa asserted, linking her to the political slogan popularized by Donald Trump during his 2016 presidential campaign.
Moussa continued by suggesting that Haley’s promise to bring a similar approach to women’s issues on a national scale was cause for concern. He characterized the entire field of Trump-aligned figures, including Haley, as running on a “dangerous anti-freedom agenda” that contradicts the desires of the American people.
The clash underscores the deep divisions surrounding reproductive rights in US politics, with Haley aligning herself with a stance embraced by conservative factions while drawing sharp criticism from opponents who view such policies as restrictive and detrimental to women’s freedoms.
