December 27th, 2024: In a move to enhance security measures and streamline air travel, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has announced a new regulation governing the carrying of hand luggage on flights. Starting next month, both domestic and international passengers will be restricted to carrying only one cabin bag or handbag on board. This measure is part of the government’s ongoing efforts to manage the increasing number of passengers at airports and improve operational efficiency.
The new regulation aims to ease passenger flow and reduce congestion at security checkpoints, benefiting both travelers and airport operations. The BCAS, together with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), decided to introduce stricter luggage rules to ensure smoother operations as air travel continues to grow.
Key Details of the New Baggage Restrictions:
- One Handbag Limit: Passengers are now allowed to carry only one handbag or cabin bag with a maximum weight of 7 kg. Any additional luggage must be checked in.
- Cabin Bag Size Limitations: The size of the cabin bag must not exceed 55 cm in height, 40 cm in length, and 20 cm in width. This is intended to standardize bag sizes across airlines and make security screening more efficient.
- Excess Baggage Charges: Passengers who exceed the weight or size limits for cabin bags will be subject to excess baggage charges.
- Exemption for Pre-purchased Tickets: For tickets purchased before May 2, 2024, the previous cabin baggage policy applies (Economy: 8 kg, Premium Economy: 10 kg, First/Business: 12 kg). However, any reissued or rescheduled tickets will follow the new regulations.
Impact on Airlines and Passengers:
Major airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, have updated their baggage policies to reflect these new rules. Passengers are advised to review the updated baggage guidelines before their flights to avoid last-minute complications or additional charges.
The changes are expected to improve overall airport efficiency, minimize delays at security checkpoints, and create a more organized travel experience for passengers. Travelers are encouraged to pack accordingly and ensure that their cabin bags comply with the new size and weight limits to avoid inconvenience during their journey.
