Manipur Director General of Police (DGP) Rajiv Singh made his first media appearance on Thursday, urging the people to not get influenced by “anti-social miscreants” in the state and to consider resettling in places which were their original homes.Addressing the media at the police headquarters in Imphal, Singh emphasised the crucial role of the public in resolving the crisis.
“Please do not be encouraged or influenced by anti-social, anti-national, armed miscreants who are attempting to disturb peace in some way,” said Singh, who assumed the position of the state police chief on June 1 amid ethnic violence in the state. He said while the security forces are working tirelessly under the guidance of both the state and central governments, the support and coordination from the people of Manipur is vital for lasting peace.
“We know that this issue will not be resolved by the police alone, and it requires contributions from every section of society,” said the DGP.Singh also addressed the rampant drug problem in the state, acknowledging its detrimental impact not only on Manipur but the entire country, adding, “The government and police are very serious about it.
“The DGP further highlighted the need for modernising the police force to enhance their investigative capabilities. He revealed plans to upgrade police technologies, which would prevent the transfer of cases to national agencies like the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“For the last five months, since the outbreak of violence in Manipur, the state police have been working day and night, resulting in losses of many lives, both from the state and among BSF and AR personnel,” said the DGP, further appealing to the people and civil society organisations of the state to come up and try to help security agencies in trying to find steps towards peace and normalcy.
