February 20, 2024: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the BJP on Tuesday, accusing them of exceeding their constitutional limits with divisive politics.
Banerjee’s comments came after a video surfaced of Bengal BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul arguing with a Sikh police officer in Bengal today, as BJP leaders were halted from visiting Sandeshkhali.
In response, Banerjee denounced what she called the BJP’s attempt to label anyone wearing a turban as a Khalistani. She expressed strong condemnation for what she deemed an effort to tarnish the reputation of Sikh community members, known for their sacrifices for the nation.
“We stand firm in protecting Bengal’s social harmony and will take stern lawful measures to prevent any attempts to disrupt it,” Banerjee affirmed.
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari faced police obstruction on Tuesday from visiting the unsettled area of Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district. Despite a Calcutta High Court division bench’s ruling allowing Adhikari’s visit, the police cited a government challenge against the court order.
Adhikari, expressing discontent, stated his intention to appeal the decision in court. This marks the third instance in the past eight days that Adhikari has been barred from visiting the area.
The unrest in Sandeshkhali stems from allegations made by numerous women against Trinamool Congress figure Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters. They accuse them of land-grabbing and coercive sexual assault.
Shajahan has been evading authorities since a group, purportedly linked to him, attacked Enforcement Directorate officials during a raid related to a ration scam on January 5.
