Indore, April 7, 2024 – Eight individuals have allegedly suffered side effects after undergoing cataract surgery at Choithram Netralaya in Indore last month. This incident has led the local administration to seal the operation theatre of the hospital and initiate an investigation.
The cataract surgeries were performed on 79 patients on March 20, under the National Programme for Control of Blindness. Following the surgeries, the health department received information about side effects on the eyes of eight of these patients.
A three-member committee has been constituted by the local administration to probe the reasons for the side effects. “It is very difficult to tell right now whether the eight patients who underwent the cataract surgery have lost their eyesight or not. The situation will become clear only after the investigation is completed,” said Dr. Pradeep Goyal, District Blindness Control Society manager.
Ashwini Verma, a managing trustee of Choithram Nethralaya, claimed there was no negligence at the hospital level in the cataract operation camp. He stated that the eight patients had a “reaction” in their eyes due to unknown reasons and all of them have been discharged from the hospital after treatment.
