New Delhi, January 11, 2024: Indore and Surat have emerged as the ‘cleanest cities’ in India, securing the top positions in the Central government’s annual cleanliness survey. The results, announced today, revealed Navi Mumbai retaining its third position in this prestigious ranking.
In the ‘best-performing states’ category of the ‘Swachh Survekshan Awards 2023,’ Maharashtra claimed the top spot, with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh following closely.
The awards ceremony, held in New Delhi, witnessed President Droupadi Murmu presenting the accolades to the winners. Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and other dignitaries graced the event with their presence.
Indore’s noteworthy achievement marked the seventh consecutive time the city secured the title of the cleanest city.
Among cities with a population of less than 1 lakh, Maharashtra’s Sasvad earned the cleanest city award. Chhattisgarh’s Patan and Maharashtra’s Lonavala secured the second and third positions in this category, respectively.
The survey also recognized Varanasi as the best and cleanest Ganga town, closely followed by Prayagraj. Mhow Cantonment Board in Madhya Pradesh clinched the top rank in the category of cleanest cantonment boards.
With a massive participation of 4,447 urban local bodies in Swachh Survekshan 2023, the government boasts this survey as the world’s largest cleanliness assessment. A significant 12 core citizen responses were received, underlining the widespread involvement in the initiative.
