Hyderabad firm, one of top electoral bond buyers, booked in bribery case

Hyderabad, April 14: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed a case against Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd and eight officials of the NMDC Iron and Steel Plant (NISP), Ministry of Steel over allegations of corruption in connection with a Rs 315 crore project for NISP. The offences listed in the FIR includes bribing public servant and criminal conspiracy.

Notably, Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) was recently revealed to be among the top buyers of electoral bonds. It donated Rs 584 crore to the BJP and Rs 195 crore to the Bharat Rashtra Samiti.

The Hyderabad-based company has been booked by the CBI in the corruption case under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Indian Penal Code.

A contract was signed between NISP, MEIL and Koya and Company Construction Ltd (KCCL) in January 2015 for a project worth around Rs 314.57 crore. However, an enquiry revealed that NDMC had already appointed Mecon Ltd to carry out the same work in 2012.

It has been alleged that eight officials of NISP/NMDC and two officials of Mecon Ltd received bribes from MEIL.The matter came to light after the Chief Vigilance Officer of NMDC filed a complaint in April 2023 against the former Executive Director of NISP, Prashant Dash and other officials.

MEIL also has a record of being granted a Rs 14,400-crore tunnel project in Mumbai a month after it purchased electoral bonds worth Rs 140 crore in April 2023.
