‘How low will you stoop’: PM attacks Nitish Kumar over population control remarks

Bharat, November 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday lashed out at Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for his controversial remarks on the role of women’s education in population control and questioned the silence of the Opposition on the matter.Addressing a rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna, PM Modi said such statements made against women amounted to insulting the country.”A big leader of the INDI alliance, ‘Ghamandiya Gathbandhan’ used indecent language for women inside (Bihar) assembly yesterday. They are not ashamed. No leader of the INDI alliance said a single word against it. People who think like this about women, can they do anything good for you?” PM Modi said.

A controversy erupted on Tuesday when Nitish Kumar spoke, almost in graphic detail, about the role of women’s education in population control, triggering an uproar from the BJP MLAs in the Bihar assembly. He, however, apologised for his comments today in the House, claiming they were misinterpreted and he felt ashamed. The Chief Minister made the controversial remarks on Tuesday while underlining the need for women’s education to check population growth and how Bihar’s fertility rate has dropped from 4.2 to 2.9 per cent. The BJP legislators demanded his resignation and called his remarks “vulgar”.

Nitish Kumar made the remarks after the state released the full report of the caste survey which detailed the economic conditions of various sections. While his comments drew smiles, including from his deputy Tejashwi Yadav, it upset several women BJP MLAs.
