New Delhi, December 19, 2024: The Parliament premises erupted into a storm of political drama on Thursday as BJP and Congress leaders clashed over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on BR Ambedkar. The protests saw both parties accusing each other of disrespecting the architect of the Indian Constitution, with MPs holding placards bearing Ambedkar’s image in a show of defiance.

The tension escalated when a BJP MP, Pratap Chandra Sarangi, sustained injuries during a heated altercation. The BJP alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi pushed another MP, causing him to fall onto Sarangi. “Rahul Gandhi pushed an MP who then fell on me, leading to my injury,” claimed Sarangi, who was later hospitalized with facial injuries. Rahul Gandhi refuted the accusation, asserting that BJP MPs blocked and pushed him and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge at the Parliament gate.

The scene turned dramatic as leaders of the INDIA bloc, including Priyanka Gandhi and Kharge, scaled the walls of Makar Dwar—the Parliament’s main gate—dressed in blue attire symbolizing Dalit movements. Holding placards, they demanded an apology and the resignation of Amit Shah, accusing him of insulting Ambedkar during his speech.

The controversy began when Congress shared a video of Amit Shah’s remarks in Parliament, accusing him of mocking Ambedkar by saying, “It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar repeatedly. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they’d secure a place in heaven across seven lives.” The BJP hit back, accusing Congress of misleading the public by sharing a “manipulated” video and threatening legal action.

The BJP also criticized Congress for alleged past amendments to the Constitution, claiming it had disrespected Ambedkar for political gain. Protesters from the BJP held banners stating, “Ambedkar showed us the path, Congress misled,” while raising slogans like, “Insult to Babasaheb Ambedkar will not be tolerated.”
