New Delhi, April 7, 2024: The ongoing Election 2024 has seen a disturbing trend of sexism targeted at women politicians across party lines. High-profile candidates like Hema Malini and Kangana Ranaut from BJP, and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee have been early targets.
Recently, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala faced backlash for a derogatory remark against Hema Malini, which led to the National Commission for Women moving the Election Commission against him. Despite an apology, the incident sparked a debate about the objectification of women in politics.
Women’s rights activist Ranjana Kumari highlighted that sexism is prevalent not only between rivals but also within political parties. Sushila Ramaswamy, a political science professor at Delhi University’s Jesus and Mary College, added that gender parity and pluralism are still nascent and uneven in India.
This election season seems to be following an unfortunate pattern, with towering figures in Indian politics, including Sonia Gandhi, Mayawati, Mamata Banerjee, Smriti Irani, Jaya Prada, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, all being targets of the sexist side of politics at one point or another.
