New Delhi, January 13, 2024: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) set a new record by transporting over 67 lakh passengers on January 1, 2024, marking the highest ridership on a New Year’s Day in the last six years, as per data released by DMRC on Saturday.
The figures revealed that a total of 67.47 lakh commuters utilized the metro services on January 1, surpassing the previous year’s count of 49.16 lakh. The data also highlighted a significant increase compared to the ridership on January 1, 2022 (23.66 lakh), January 1, 2020 (55.26 lakh), and January 1, 2019 (50.16 lakh). Notably, the lowest ridership of 18.07 lakh was recorded on January 1, 2021, the first New Year celebration post COVID-19 lockdown.
On this year’s New Year’s Day, long queues were observed outside various metro stations, including Rajiv Chowk, Patel Chowk, and Central Secretariat.
Similarly, on December 31 last year, 48.46 lakh people availed metro services. The highest ridership on New Year’s Eve in the last six years was recorded at 55.29 lakh on December 31, 2019, as per the data.
The data also revealed that 47.40 lakh commuters availed the facility on December 31, 2022, 27.45 lakh in 2021, and 50.67 lakh in 2018. The lowest ridership of 18.86 lakh was recorded on December 31, 2020, the first New Year’s Eve celebration post the Covid lockdown.
The DMRC, aiming to enhance commuter experience, recently integrated its ticketing service with the ‘One Delhi’ mobile application. The ‘One Delhi’ app, originally utilized for generating QR tickets for DTC buses, now serves as a comprehensive platform, providing seamless travel arrangements by incorporating QR tickets for the Delhi Metro as well, as stated by DMRC Principal Executive Director Anuj Dayal.
