Congress leader Phool Singh Baraiya, who won the assembly election from Bhander in Madhya Pradesh, smeared ink on his face in Bhopal on Thursday. Before polls, Baraiya had promised to blacken his face if the BJP wins by over 50 seats in Madhya Pradesh. After smearing ink, Baraiya told, “I had promised to blacken my face if the BJP wins by over 50 seats in Madhya Pradesh and I fulfilled my promise. Digvijaya Singh appealed to me not to smear my face, but I did so as I had to fulfil my promise.”
He further said that he smeared ink to “protect the Constitution and democracy” of the country.Congress leader Digvijaya Singh was also present with Baraiya. In a video which went viral on social media, Baraiya had promised to blacken his face if the BJP wins the assembly elections with over 50 seats.After the BJP won 163 out of 230 seats in the assembly election, Baraiya told India Today TV on Tuesday that he would blacken his face in front of the Raj Bhawan on December 7.But as he was not allowed to go near the Raj Bhawan, he smeared ink on his face in Roshanpura area in Bhopal.
Urging the poll body to stop using EVMs during elections, Baraiya had claimed that his party was initially ahead during the ballot count, but as soon as the EVM counting began, the BJP surged ahead.Baraiya had also said he was confident that his party would win. However, Congress had to settle for just 66 seats.
