Gangtok, February 11, 2024: Three people sadly lost their lives and 16 others were injured on Saturday evening when a speeding milk tanker slammed into a crowd at a fair in Ranipool, Sikkim.
The tragic accident happened around 7:30 pm near the mela ground, where people were gathered to play a game called tombola. The speeding tanker lost control and plowed into the crowd, causing chaos and injuries.
Two people died on the spot, while another person passed away at the hospital. All the injured people were rushed to the Central Referral Hospital, where five are reported to be in serious condition.
The police swiftly arrested the driver of the tanker and are investigating the cause of the accident.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Sing Tamang expressed his deep sadness over the incident and offered his condolences to the families of the victims. He also announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh to each of the families who lost loved ones.
“We are doing everything we can to support the injured and their families during this difficult time,” said the Chief Minister. “My thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy.”
