Supreme Court Marks 75th Anniversary with Historic Ceremonial Bench and Digital Initiatives

New Delhi, January 27, 2024: In commemoration of its 75th anniversary, the Supreme Court of India is set to convene a unique ceremonial bench tomorrow, replicating the historic first sitting of the court on January 28, 1950. Under the leadership of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, this unprecedented ceremonial bench has been organized for the first time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate in the program before the ceremonial sitting commences. The bench will be arranged in Chief Justice Chandrachud’s courtroom, with all 34 judges of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice Chandrachud, in attendance. Following the 1950 arrangement, Chief Justices of all 25 high courts will also be present, and the event will be livestreamed online.

The ceremonial sitting aims to reassure citizens that the judiciary will continue to serve as the guardian of the Constitution. Chief Justice Chandrachud, in preparation for the event, held consultations and examined photographs from the first Supreme Court bench in 1950.

In line with the historical seating arrangement, the 34 Supreme Court judges will sit on the bench, and the courtroom will be prepared to accommodate the 25 high court Chief Justices, albeit only as judges.

The livestream, expected to last 30 minutes according to the court registry, will showcase the digital initiatives implemented by the Supreme Court under Chief Justice Chandrachud’s leadership. The program will also feature the inauguration of the Supreme Court’s new website. The event serves as a testament to the court’s commitment to embracing technology while upholding its constitutional role.
