New Delhi, January 13, 2024: The central government of India has expressed strong objection to the recent visit by the UK High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK). The visit to Mirpur on January 10 has been deemed “highly objectionable” by the Ministry of External Affairs, citing it as an infringement on India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In an official statement issued on Saturday, the Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are, have been, and will always remain an integral part of India. Foreign Secretary Vinay Mohan Kwatra has lodged a robust protest with the British High Commissioner in India, condemning the act of infringement.
Following her visit to the region, Jane Marriott shared pictures on social media, mentioning Mirpur as the heart of the UK and Pakistan’s people-to-people ties. She highlighted that 70% of British Pakistani roots are from Mirpur, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts for the diaspora.
However, the British envoy’s visit has sparked criticism on social media, with users describing it as “shameful” and calling for action against Jane Marriott. Similar sentiments were expressed in October 2023 when the US envoy to Pakistan visited Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. On that occasion, the Indian government raised the issue with US authorities, reiterating that the entire region of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India.
