Former PM HD Deve Gowda Urges PM Modi’s Intervention in Cauvery Water Crisis

Bengaluru, January 13, 2024: Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda expressed his concern on Saturday over the perceived injustice faced by Karnataka in the ongoing Cauvery water problem. At a press conference held at the JD(S) party office in Bengaluru, the 90-year-old leader lamented that only Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “who is set to become Prime Minister again,” holds the power to resolve the crisis.

Gowda, the patriarch of the Janata Dal (Secular), vowed to relentlessly fight for the Cauvery cause until his last breath. He emphasized that PM Modi is the key to finding a solution to the water crisis that Karnataka is currently grappling with.

“Only Narendra Modi, who is set to become Prime Minister again, can solve the Cauvery problem,” stated Gowda firmly.

The former Prime Minister highlighted the annual routine where Tamil Nadu submits an application to the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) for the release of Cauvery water. Despite Karnataka’s water scarcity, officials argue in vain against the allocations mandated by CWMA.

Expressing regret, Gowda pointed out that the CWMA has never visited Karnataka to assess the actual water availability in Cauvery reservoirs.

Gowda called for unity among political parties in addressing the Cauvery issue and urged them to set aside politics for a collective cause. “We should fight together to make Prime Minister Modi aware of the injustice done to us. There should be no politics in this. Political parties should fight together for this cause,” appealed Gowda to all political entities.

Asserting his commitment, he declared, “I will be in the Rajya Sabha for another two and a half years. I will fight for the Cauvery cause till my last breath. I will not sit calm till the people of the state get justice.”

Gowda announced his plan to go to Delhi on February 1 to attend the Rajya Sabha session, where he intends to raise the Cauvery issue and request Prime Minister Modi’s intervention in resolving the crisis.
