Agartala, January 08, 2024: Rajya Sabha Member and Home Standing Committee member, Biplab Kumar Deb, expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for successfully passing three crucial amended bills in Parliament. These bills aim to replace the outdated British-era criminal laws that have been in place for over 150 years.
Speaking at a press conference held at the Agartala State Guest House, Biplab Kumar Deb highlighted the significance of the three laws: Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshiya Act. These laws have been designed to modernize and replace the archaic criminal laws instituted during the British colonial period.
Deb emphasized that these laws, originally formulated by the British, were not updated to align with the needs of an independent India after gaining freedom in 1947. He credited the current government, led by Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, for taking the initiative to amend and replace these outdated laws that persisted for decades.
“The laws were first designed by the British for their means, but later after they left the country in 1947, those laws were not amended for its enactment as per the requirement of our country. Since 1947, no government intended to amend those laws as they wanted to rule the nation with the British era criminal laws only,” he explained.
Deb asserted that these three new laws, reflecting the Indian ethos, will usher in significant positive changes in the criminal justice system. He praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the four years of persistent efforts that culminated in the President of India approving the enactment of these laws.
In addition to his acknowledgment of the legislative achievements, Biplab Kumar Deb also addressed various developmental issues related to Tripura. He raised concerns about the Instrumental Landing System (ILS) at Agartala MBB Airport, advocated for the declaration of Agartala MBB Airport as an international airport, and assured reporters that he is actively pursuing these matters with the Union Ministries.
